About the Keynote Speaker
John Bertrand is a respected sporting leader and business figure, best known as the Olympic gold medallist and skipper of Australia II, the yacht that secured the historic 1983 America’s Cup victory. Under his leadership, Australia ended the United States’ 132-year winning streak in the world’s oldest international sporting trophy — a triumph widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history.
Beyond his achievements on the water, John has made a lasting impact in sports governance and business. As former Chairman of Swimming Australia, he led significant governance and high-performance reforms within one of the nation’s premier sporting organisations, strengthening both its culture and competitive success.
In the corporate arena, he has built an accomplished career marked by extensive international experience, including involvement in a successful NASDAQ listing. He also served as a senior executive at Coles Group, where he developed deep expertise in corporate leadership, strategy, and organisational performance.
Today, John is a sought-after author and speaker who translates lessons from elite sport and business into powerful insights on leadership, culture, resilience, and winning against the odds.
He features in the 2022 Netflix documentary Untold: Race of the Century, charting the 1983 America’s Cup, where a scrappy Australian crew broke the New York Yacht Club’s 132-year winning streak. It details the innovation of the Australia II’s secret winged keel and the intense pressure of the final race.
